Most kitchens around Union Square open for dinner at 5pm and stop seating somewhere between 9pm and 11pm, so on a weeknight the binding constraint is the last table, not the first. Search “italian restaurant union square” at six o’clock and nothing in the results sorts by who is still seating at nine. Anything within a ten-minute walk of the park is also within a ten-minute walk of the 14th Street-Union Square station, where the 4, 5, 6, L, N, Q, R and W all stop. That is most of the appeal of eating here. Below are eight rooms around the square, what each one is good at, which train gets you there, and how late each kitchen runs according to its own site as of August 2026.

Quick answer

The latest listed closings here are Rezdôra and Casa Mono, both to 11pm, with Tarallucci e Vino also running to 11pm on Friday and Saturday. The earliest close is Zero Otto Nove on a Sunday, at 9pm. Almost everything on this list opens for dinner at 5pm, so a 5:15pm table is usually available when an 8pm one is not. One room, Isabelle’s Osteria, publishes no daily hours at all, which makes it a phone call rather than a click.

Getting there without a transfer

The 4, 5 and 6 run under Park Avenue South and Lexington. The N, Q, R and W run under Broadway. The L crosses 14th Street. All of them meet at 14th Street-Union Square, and the north exits at 16th and 17th Streets leave you three or four blocks from most of the addresses below.

Coming from uptown, 23rd Street is the better stop for anything above 20th Street: the 6 at 23rd and Park Avenue South, the N, R and W at 23rd and Broadway.

One piece of local geography that changes your walking time: the Union Square Greenmarket runs Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 8am to 6pm, year round, on 17th Street between Broadway and Park Avenue South and along Union Square West. On those four days the north plaza is still packed at 6pm while you are trying to make a 6:30 reservation. Add five minutes.

The rooms, and who each one suits

Union Square Cafe, 101 East 19th Street

Dinner daily 5pm to 10:30pm. Lunch Monday to Friday 11:30am to 2:30pm, brunch Saturday and Sunday 11am to 2:30pm, and a midday menu daily from 2:30pm to 5pm, which is worth remembering when you land at 4pm and every other kitchen is between services. Best suited to a dinner that has a job to do, where the room needs to be right and a 5pm table works as well as an 8pm one. The current dinner menu leans seasonal: Agnolotti ai Mais with sweet corn and summer truffle, Mafaldine all’Anatra with duck ragù. The site also lists a Restaurant Week menu at $45 and $60 while NYC Restaurant Week runs, which ends 16 August 2026.

Rezdôra, 27 East 20th Street

Dinner nightly 5pm to 11pm, lunch Tuesday to Friday noon to 2:30pm, and a weekend midday service 11:30am to 2:30pm. Three blocks north of the park. SevenRooms.

This is the table for people who came for the pasta and planned a month out. The restaurant describes itself as Emilia-Romagna cooking centered on house-made pasta from Chef Stefano Secchi, and the name refers to the head of the household, the nonna who rolls pasta by hand. A regional pasta tasting is listed at $110, with an optional wine pairing at $90; the site says the whole table has to take part and that it runs two hours.

If you want the pasta without the two hours, the weekend midday service is an easier booking than dinner.

Massara, 913 Broadway

Dinner only, seven nights, 5pm to 10:30pm. On Broadway at 20th Street, three blocks up from the park’s north-west corner. SevenRooms.

Best suited to a dinner where you want one region rather than a tour of Italy. Massara is dedicated to the cuisine of Campania and comes from the same chef as Rezdôra; the name means matriarch in Campanian dialect. Cooking runs through wood-burning ovens and grills. Since it is dinner-only from 5pm, the first hour of service is the easiest to get.

Novitá, 102 East 22nd Street

Lunch Monday to Friday noon to 3:30pm, dinner nightly 5pm to 10pm, no weekend lunch. Five blocks north of the park, on 22nd Street between Park Avenue South and Lexington. (212) 677-2222.

Go here when you want to hear the person across the table. The pasta list is long and mostly fresh, from tonnarelli cacio e pepe at $27 to pappardelle with lamb ragù at $32. Isabelle’s Osteria, 245 Park Avenue South

Call this a walk rather than a Union Square address. Isabelle’s sits at Park Avenue South and 20th Street, three blocks north-east of the park on the Gramercy side. Contemporary Italian, house-made pasta and seasonal dishes, in a 150-seat room with a long bar and a private dining room.

Best suited to the dinner with a headcount. Reservations run through OpenTable and Resy only, release 30 days ahead, and take parties of up to ten. A Restaurant Week dinner is running at three courses for $60, Monday to Friday from 5pm, until Restaurant Week finishes on 16 August.

The caveat matters on a list organized around closing times: Isabelle’s does not publish daily opening and closing hours on its site. Call (212) 388-1145 before you build a late evening around it. If you are weighing the room and the menu first, Isabelle’s Osteria is where to start.

Zero Otto Nove, 15 West 21st Street

Lunch and dinner Monday to Thursday, noon to 3pm and 5pm to 9:30pm; Friday to 10:30pm; Saturday dinner only 5pm to 10:30pm; Sunday 4pm to 9pm, the earliest close here. Four blocks north of the park, one block west of Broadway. 212-242-0899.

The strongest fit for a mixed group, since wood-fired pizza sits on the same menu as the handmade pasta and nobody has to give way. Southern Italian, rooted in the Salerno area.

Tarallucci e Vino, 15 East 18th Street

The all-day room and the closest to the park: one block north, between Fifth Avenue and Broadway. Monday to Thursday 8am to 10:30pm, Friday 8am to 11pm, Saturday 9am to 11pm, Sunday 11am to 10:30pm. Happy hour 3pm to 6pm in the bar and outdoor area only. (212) 228-5400.

Best suited to dinner you did not plan. Nothing else on this list runs continuously from breakfast, which makes it the answer at 4:45pm on a Tuesday.

Casa Mono, 52 Irving Place

Spanish rather than Italian, and it earns its place on a list of what is actually open: noon to 11pm, seven days, at 17th Street and Irving Place on the park’s east side. 212 253 2773. Small plates move faster than three courses, and the 11pm close makes this the fallback when a show at Irving Plaza runs long. Two things follow from that table. Only Zero Otto Nove cuts its Sunday meaningfully short, at 9pm, while the rest hold their weeknight times through the weekend. And the dinner-only rooms are usually easiest at 5pm, because nobody wants that table. Can I walk in for dinner near Union Square, or do I need to book?

Book if you are more than two people or arriving after 7pm, and try your luck before 6pm or at a bar. None of these restaurants publishes a walk-in policy, so the honest answer is that a bar seat is a gamble rather than a guarantee. The rooms built around a long bar, which here means Union Square Cafe, Tarallucci e Vino and Isabelle’s, are the ones where that gamble has the best odds, and Casa Mono’s small-plates format turns tables faster than a pasta-and-secondi menu will. Rezdôra is the one we would not count on without a reservation. For six or more, call rather than using the booking widget.

Before you book

Check the day, then the hour, then the room. Sunday and Monday cut both the hours and the choices around here, and August trims a few services further. Everything above came from each restaurant’s own site in early August 2026, except where the hours are not published at all.
